INTRODUCING SEASON 1 - BRAIN ANATOMY
Hi guys, for everyone who's curious about the brain, I've decided to introduce a season on brain anatomy!!
In each post, we will dive into a specific part of the brain, breaking it down into bite-sized, easy-to-digest info. The goal is to keep it simple and quick - so we can all learn something new about the brain!
Today's post starts with a super basic intro to brain anatomy- let's get into it!
VISUALISING AND NAVIGATING THE BRAIN
the brain is a 3D structure, but we can also visualise it in a 2D structure
Here are some scientific terms used:
CORONAL - taken in the frontal, plane view
SAGITTAL - taken in the plane dividing the 2 hemispheres
TRANSVERSE/ HORIZONTAL - imagine if someone is standing upright, these sections would be parallel to the ground
Take a look at the picture below to understand it better!

SOME MORE KEY WORDS!!
Anterior - towards the front of the brain
Posterior - back of the brain
Superior - top
Inferior - bottom
Rostral - in the direction of the nose, towards the front of the brain/ top of the spinal cord
Caudal - in the direction of the tail, towards the back of the brain/ bottom of the spinal cord
Dorsal - towards the top of the brain
Ventral - towards the bottom of the brain
Medial - towards the middle
Lateral - towards the side
Contralateral - on the opposite side
Ipsilateral - on the same side Read more at:
